The Healing Power of Pets
A few years ago a leading psychologist suggested that hospital patients should be given “pets on prescription” to speed their recovery
Dr June McNicholas said that more hospitals and care homes should give visiting rights to animals when their owners were ill.
She said that in most cases patients were more likely to catch something from their human visitors than they were from their pets.
She added: “More hospitals should acknowledge the importance of animals in people’s lives and provide visiting rooms for those patients desperate to see their pets”
Pet visiting schemes
She said that while a handful of hospitals and hospices had very effective pet visiting schemes, many could do better.
“We already know that people love their pets but it can be dismissed as something like sentimentality and I think we dismiss a lot of what is so essential in people’s lives,” she said.
Dr McNicholas, from the Department of Psychology at the University of Warwick, said pets improved people’s chances of survival after a life-threatening illness, reduced stress and provided companionship.
She said if possible pets should have as much contact with their owners as possible without turning hospitals into a menagerie.
Pets ‘should be allowed on the bed’
This could also be achieved by letting patients see their pets through a window in a garden area outside the ward.
“Pet visiting rooms should be acceptable in hospitals wherever they can be fitted in, and where possible pets should be allowed on to the bed.
“I know this is going to raise huge cries of the risks but to be perfectly honest people are more likely to catch infections from their human visitors.”
Facts about the benefits of pets on human health
In a recent study of people who had suffered a bereavement, pet owners reported fewer physical symptoms. Further reseach has also uncovered:
- More than 87 per cent of breast cancer patients in one study confirmed their pets provided support.
- Experts believe owning pets can help boost immune systems of children – and even prevent, rather than cause, asthma.
- Ferrets have been used to help blind children understand movement and space.
- Dogs have been shown to be as good at reducing stress levels as a chat with a friend.
- Some studies have shown that married couples who own a pet are more likely to be happy than those who without pets.
- One research project in the late 1990s found that owning a pet was as good as opting for a low-salt diet in reducing blood pressure.

The laughing Buddha
One of the most popular Buddhas, usually shown with a big smile and a fat belly, this laughing statue is said to bring good fortune.
He’s also known as Ho Tai or Pu-Tai and in China as The Friendly One. He represents a Chinese monk from over 1,000 years ago, who was said to be an incarnation of Buddha. He’s usually seen carrying a small cloth sack, to represent abundance and plenty. Tradition dictates that you should rub his tummy once a day – to ensure that you never go hungry. He judges no one and is also known as the patron of sick children. Put him in a place of importance in the living room or on your work desk to reap maximum benefits.
The standing Buddha
This statue is often shown in different positions. Standing with one palm held up and the other down, means that the Buddha will bring courage and stop arguments.
If his hands are crossed over his stomach, he’ll boost your confidence and can be a focus for meditation. He governs Sundays. The standing Buddha with his hands across his chest will bring contemplation and joy. He governs Friday. If he carries a bowl of fruit, he’ll ensure that you never go hungry.
The Lotus Buddha
The Buddha that sits in a lotus postion usually has both of his hands resting in front of him, facing upwards, and this is one of the most common positions of a Buddha statue.
This position represents the growing mind and is one of the best Buddhas for meditation.

How To Keep Your Spirit System Healthy
The mind, body and spirit are a bit like a finely tuned computer system. So any disruption in our lives is like having a bug or a virus that slows things down!
If we are living in disharmony, our chakras – which help energy flow from our spirit through to our minds and bodies – can act against us instead of in our favour. Why? Well, it’s often because we are sending out unclear signals that confuse the system! So here are a few tips for maintaining a healthy spirit:
- Avoid feeling envious of other people – envy like jealousy is poision for your soul
- Relieve stress by taking a quiet walk in the park or just quietly sit gazing out of the window. This gives your spirit a chance to transmit pleasurable signals through the mind and body, allowing it to rest.
- Avoid ‘psychic’ vampires – people who leave you feeling exhausted just by being in their company.
- Try not to prolong arguments – they preoccupy the spirit and mind and block productive energy.
- Keep in check what you allow yourself to say. Expressions such as ‘I am sick to death of…’ or ‘I can’t stand this situation’ give the wrong instructions to your body.

Geraniums Make an effective massage oil for menstrual cramps by infusing a handful of fresh leaves in a small bottle of grapeseed oil.
Horseradish The root contains an antibiotic mustard oil that has been used to treat kidney and urinary tract infections. It contains high levels of vitamin C, potassium, sulphur and calcium, and is excellent for treating coughs and colds.

Seven Steps To Healing Yourself
Many of us reach for the painkillers at the first signs of a headache or cold, but the art of self-healing is becoming increasingly popular among alternative circles
Below is a simple seven step self healing plan designed to heal common ailments from headaches and chest infections to digestive problems in under twenty minutes.
1. Prepare yourself for healing
Begin your self-treatment by lying on your back on a bed or sofa with a flat pillow or a rolled towel propped under your neck. This will help you relax and prevent your muscles from tensing up. Your arms should be by your side with your palms lightly touching your thighs in a relaxed way. Wear loose, warm clothes – as lying motionless lowers your body temperature.
With the light off, gently shut your eyes and mouth – try to breathe through your nostrils deeply and evenly. Inhale for two counts, hold for one and exhale for two counts – as deep as possible but without straining
When the in-breath matches the length of the out-breath, this allows a stable amount of energy to be drawn into the body. This also ensures that the lungs are thoroughly cleared before the next in-breath, which means that far more air is inhaled. As you breathe in, visualise drawing a white light into your body.
As you breathe out, think of circulating this white light that practitioners call ‘healing energy’ – throughout your body, sending it to parts of the body that feel below par. When you breathe out, think of cleansing your body of any toxic materials that could be lurking around.
Breathing deeply and rhythmically aids the uptake of oxygen and releases tension throughout the whole body. This creates a sense of calm, clears the mind and sharpens general awareness. Repeat this practise for two minutes.
2. Charge up your energy
With the tips of your fingers of both hands, gently brush your body for around two minutes. Begin sweeping in a downward movement from your head to your toes. This, according to practitioners, increases energy in your body, and practitioners claim ‘charges up’ or strengthens your ‘aura’ – the just visible energy field around our bodies which is composed of subtle matter which is said to reflect the state of our health. Imagine that healing power is entering your body to help make you fit and well.
3. Energise yourself
Place your right palm on your solar plexus – the area just above your navel which, claims author and alternative healing practitioner, Richard Lawrence, is your energy centre – the area responsible for generating fresh energy. Now cover your right hand with your left hand – as, practioners claim, healing energy travels down our arms at this point, into the palms of our hands and into our solar plexus. From here it is sent to the rest of our body. As you do this, breathe in for two counts, hold for one count and breathe out for two counts. If you start to experience tingling in your neck, head or spine it is a sign of energy being circulated around your body – if you do not, don’t worry this does not mean healing is not happening.
4. Ask your body to relax
With your eyes still closed, focus on the parts of your body which are tense. Gently instruct your body to relax: if your shoulder is tense, focus on your shoulder and gently imagine you are asking it to relax. Concentrate on each area you need to for around two minutes. Now, focus your attention on your heart. This technique is especially useful for people who lead a stressful life or if you’re feeling depressed. Paying attention to your heart in this way will help it beat slowly and strongly. Do this for two minutes.
5. Treating your ailments
Now you have energised and relaxed your body, focus your mind on getting better. It might be a headache, backache, or a chest infection. Keeping your right hand on your solar plexus, place your left hand on your ailment. With your eyes shut, spend one to five minutes visualising a white light travelling through your right hand towards your left – as if completing a circuit. Practitioners call this circuit the nadic linkages – which they believe is an energy channel which runs between the major ‘chakras’ or energy centres of our body. If energy is generated from the solar plexus – or battery centre – healers believe it will link the energy flow from one palm to the other.
Try not to limit your healing to one spot: if the pain stems from your neck, but is located in your shoulders, touch both areas. Keep up your deep rhythmic breathing and continue this process for a couple of minutes on each area.
6. Seal your healing
Still lying down, visualise a warm violet glow coming up from the bed, through the floor and above your head. Imagine you are being bathed in this pulsating violet glow. Violet is the most spiritual colour of ancient mystical traditions, says Lawrence. For this reason, healers believe thinking of this colour will help to cleanse your body of negative energy.
7. Rounding off healing
Start to switch off from healing allowing your thoughts to come and go without indulging in them. Practioners call this ‘watching your own mind.’ This will allow your brain waves to move into an alpha state – otherwise known as meditation.
Recent clinical trials by Dr Herbert Benson and Dr Sarah Lazar of the American Mind and Body Medical Institute in Boston, proves that slowing down brain activity in this way gives our bodies time to gather strength and boost energy. Meditation: Good for the heart
Cuts risk of heart attack by 50%
Patients with heart disease almost halved their risk of heart attack by practising meditation, according to recent research.
In the first study of its kind, patients with heart disease who practised transcendental meditation were found to have nearly 50% lower rates of heart attack, stroke, and death compared with other non-meditating patients.
In the nine year trial, 201 African-American men and women with an average age of 59 were randomly assigned to stress-reducing transcendental meditation or health education classes about the risk factors for heart disease, including diet and exercise.
All patients had narrowing of the arteries and everyone in the trial continued taking their usual drug regime.
The results showed a 47% reduction in combined death, heart attacks, and strokes in the meditating patients compared with those taking the health education classes. They also had lower blood pressure, according to the results of a first-ever study presented during the annual meeting of the American Heart Association.
Dr Robert Schneider, who led the study, said: “Previous research on transcendental meditation has shown reductions in blood pressure, psychological stress, and other risk factors for heart disease, irrespective of ethnicity.
“But this is the first controlled clinical trial to show that long-term practice of this particular stress reduction program reduces the incidence of clinical cardiovascular events, that is heart attacks, strokes and mortality.”
Theodore Kotchen, professor of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, said: “This study is an example of the contribution of a lifestyle intervention – stress management – to the prevention of cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients.”
Dr. Schneider said that the effect of transcendental meditation in the trial was like adding a class of newly discovered medications for the prevention of heart disease.
“In this case, the new medications are derived from the body’s own internal pharmacy stimulated by the transcendental meditation practice,” he said.

Healing The Mind And Body With Colour Therapy

Here’s a brief guide to how therapists diagnose and treat patients with colour.
THE DIFFERENT METHODS OF DIAGNOSIS
There are a number of ways that colour therapists can diagnose their patients.
The first is called the Luscher Test. This entails being shown eight coloured cards. You are then asked to choose three that appeal to you. These colours relate to your emotional, mental and physical health and may reveal imbalances that need to be corrected.
Kinesiology This technique tests the muscles to discover any weak areas in the body. To find which colour is needed, a therapist will normally ask you to hold up each colour with your left hand, while holding your right arm horizontally across your body. As you look at each colour, the therapist will gently push your right arm. When no resistance is felt in the arm, therapists believe this means you need the colour you are holding.
Dowsing This technique can help diagnose any colours that you are lacking. A pendulum handing from either a cord or a chain is used and normally swings clockwise or anticlockwise in response to each question you answer with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response. The therapist works through the eight spectrum colours searching for a ‘yes’ response to show the colour you require.
Colour diagnostic chart Some therapists use this more complex method, based on the 32 vertebras of the spine. According to this method, the spine is divided into four sections, each containing eight vertebrae, relating to one of the colours of the spectrum.
From the top of the spine downwards, the first eight vertebrae make up mental health, the second eight emotional health, the next eight metabolism and the final eight physical health.
The therapist will ask you to sign your name on the back of a chart of the spine. The theory is that your signature contains your vibration and acts as a ‘witness’ – ie shows your energy. The therapist then dowses the spine to see which vertebrae need attention.
THE TWO MOST COMMON METHODS OF TREATMENT
Therapists use different methods of treatment. One method of treatment involves shining light from a machine through stained glass filters onto the affected part of the body. You wear a white robe throughout the session and the therapist first carefully sets the machine so that it emits colour in its correct amounts.
Another treatment involves the therapist initially scanning your body and sensing the condition of your aura by moving his or her hands up and down your body. You are then treated by being draped in a silk of the appropriate colour and left in a bright room to absorb the maximum light. Alternatively a lamp can be used to illuminate the treatment room with the right colour.
Therapists claim improvement in many conditions often shows after three colour treatments. Between sessions you may be advised to wear certain colours, eat foods of these colours or visualise them several times daily.

What is Chakra Healing?
Our chakras are vortexes of energy at seven centres in the body and relate to the flows of subtle energy throughout our endocrine system. They are symbols of the connection between the physical and spiritual and when they are in balance, we are in balance. When we are blocked, therefore it probably means one or more of our chakras is blocked.
Yogis have used this system for centuries as an essential part of healing. Although this ancient Indian system may seem out-of-touch from more orthodox medicine, there has been a big surge of interest in this and other more alternative therapies in recent years, especially where the use of more traditional prescription drugs has failed. The origins of this system are in Hindu culture and the earliest use of the word ‘chakra’ is found in the Vedas, the four holy books of the Hindu religion which date back to before 2500 BC.
The word chakra means ‘wheel’ or ‘disk’ in Sanscrit and they are normally portrayed as lotus flowers resonating at different frequencies and each corresponding with the colours of the rainbow. So the ‘root’(lowest) chakra corresponds with red and relates to our material existence;
the ‘kath’ (second) resonates with orange and our emotional/sexual feelings;
the ‘solar plexus’ (third) with gold or yellow and our identity and confidence;
the ‘heart’ (fourth) with green or pink and our feelings of love and forgiveness;
the throat (fifth) is blue and of course relates to communication; and the 3rd eye (sixth) is indigo and relates to psychic awareness and visions. (Interestingly many people with mental illness simply have a blockage or disturbance in this chakra). The crown (7th) chakra is our spiritual link with the divine and when this is fully balanced it is a very blissful place to be! The colour is amethyst. Another chakra is sometimes referred to, which exists between the heart and throat. This is the thymus chakra and relates to brotherly love and compassion. The colour for this is turquoise.
There are crystals too which correspond with each chakra. The fact that we can’t physically see our chakras is explained away by the fact that they are vibrating at a rate which is normally undetectable by all but the most gifted of humans, but there are very tangible benefits in balancing the body’s chakras, and we see evidence of this in the fact that more and more people are moving towards this and other forms of healing. Alternative practitioners know that these ancient systems work because of one thing, they view us in a holistic (or ‘wholistic’ way), ie as a whole person, and they base their beliefs on the fact that in order to create optimum well-being the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual must be in balance and working together to create a healthy, happy you! Why not find an alternative therapy that suits you – there are many books on chakra healing and that’s a great place to start! A visualisation for meeting your Spirit Guides
This is great for actually seeing who your guides are.
- Sit down comfortably somewhere quiet and take a few calm, deep breaths, breathing out any tensions from your body and mind.
- Close your eyes and see yourself walking into a beautiful garden with a bench at the centre. See yourself sitting on this bench and ask for your guide to approach you and sit next to you.
- Ask your guide any questions you may have. Then thank your guide for coming and see yourself leaving the garden.
- Feel yourself coming back into the room and back into your body. Slowly open your eyes.
- Write down the information you get from your guide as this helps you build a relationship with them.
Automatic writing is a process where you use writing to channel information from your guides. It’s brilliant for getting very specific information.
- Again, find a quiet space where you can sit down with a pen and piece of paper. Take three deep breaths and breathe out any tension
- Start with a simple question such as, who is the spirit guide working with me at this moment in my life? Empty your mind and write the answer that immediately comes to you without censoring it.
- Ask as many questions as you like. At the end, thank them for their help and clap your hands loudly three times to clear the energy and ground yourself.

What is Healing Through Touch?
Your mother’s touch was the first healing through touch you ever experienced. She gave you her healing energy from infancy when she loved you and rocked you to soothe your colicky crying, to when you fell over and she rubbed your sore knee better, to her sympathetic cuddle when your first love dumped you. Make no mistake, mother’s love heals. And humankind has trusted and relied upon those who heal by touch since the dawn of our existence.
In every culture, in every tribe there is a history of healing through touch, known as ‘the laying on of hands’. Ancient Chinese and Aztec magicians, Native American medicine givers, and shamans around the planet have applied sensitivity, insight, courage and compassionate science to interrupt illness, disease or negativity in their fellows.
Today’s alternative medicine often includes different types of healing through touch, though these modalities are meant to safely complement conventional care, not replace it. Here are some examples:
• Reiki. Developed in the early 20th century by a Japanese monk, it’s the laying on of hands to reduce stress and promote relaxation leading to healing.
• Massage Therapy. One of the oldest of healing modalities and one of today’s most popular sources of complementary healing. Dating back 3,000 years in Chinese history and known everywhere, massage has trained practitioners manipulate muscles, skin, and tissue to affect healing and stress reduction.
• Qigong. A Mandarin technique with many ways to practice. One form involves interacting with living organisms, manipulation of the body, and specialized massage.
• Healing Touch. Developed by a nurse, Janet Mentgen, who espouses energy-based care. She adopted modalities from ancient shamans and from various aboriginal healing ways.
In healing through touch sessions, a trained practitioner sets the scene with music, scents, and lighting. This isn’t show biz, it’s a way to precondition the body and mind to quieten, to relax, and to accept re-balancing. To be effective, the therapy must bring the body into balance and alignment—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
The idea is that toxins, pain, illness, and unbalance block the flow of energy, including healing energy. Touch can reestablish clear channels. Once those blocks are removed, the patient has the greatest opportunity for healing and re-balancing.

Bereaved parents George and Lina Tannous believe their dead son is performing miracles after the walls in their home started weeping.
A strange oil, which scientists haven’t yet identified, first began leaking down the walls of their house in Sydney, Australia, a few weeks after 17-year-old Mike died in a car crash. The Tannouses claim the oil has healing properities, and people flock to the house to cure their ailments.

The Egyptian Book of the Dead
This might not sound like a bestseller to us, but to the Ancient Egyptians it was an essential read!
It may seem morbid to place such importance on the dead, but with hundreds of gods waiting on the other side, the Egyptians believed in securing a soul’s path to the next life.
They did this by anointing the dead, and burying them with charms and seals. Text from the book would be carved on the sarcophagus, and in later years, written on papyrus. It was important the book was close at hand, so that the dead soul could refer to it during their journey to the underworld.
The book itself contained spells, charms and passwords which make the transaction run smoothly.

No one can deny the startling beauty of the pyramids. Amazing works of art, they evoke powerful feelings and also some interesting theories as to how they were created.
