Dream Meanings: Nightmares Why We Need Them
Nightmares whether they are single or recurring, are wake-up calls. They urge us to pay attention to something that is causing us distress. They alert us to potential problems and help us face issues that we avoid when awake. They may appear as a result of post-traumatic stress as our psyche struggles to come to terms with disastrous events.
Whatever the nightmare theme, try the 'face and conquer' technique used by the Senoi people of Malaysia. When awake, imagine that you turn and face the threat. Tell it what you want it to do or explain how it makes you feel. This gives you the opportunity to address your fears directly and helps dispel the anxiety. Also, speak from the point of view of the threat. What does it feel like if you swap roles and tell the nightmare from the threat's point of view?
If you still cannot make sense of the nightmare after you've spent time on it, then let it go. Be patient, because some dreams are part of a longer process and other dreams will come along to help you solve the puzzle. Some dream meaning take a long time to become clear.
